The "Tough Guy" Sport: Rodeo - American sport - an experience in itself. Young cowboys on wild bulls trying to defy gravity. Charged up by beer, the spectators cheer and sing the national anthem in the full heat of the day.

Whilst photographing the Crystal Springs Ranch Rodeo in Clear Lake South Dakota, a young woman came up to me and asked me to send her photographs. She explained to me that she had run out of film just before her friend took part in the rodeo poker game. As there hadn't been enough cowboys ready to take part in the contest, he had decided, under the influence, to take part from the audience.

Back in New York, whilst editing prints, I fell upon the photos and sent them on to her.Two months later, her rodeo poker friend died in a snowmobile accident. These were the last pictures taken of him. Coincidence?
