roman cemeteries
This walk guides us through the historical cemeteries of Rome, visits celebrities, cultural icons and writers. The Roman cemeteries belong to the special treasures of the eternal city. Magnificent mausoleums, moorish palasts and special tombs convey an impression of Roman burial culture. Every grave tells a personal story, which could have also been written by Alberto Moravia, Federico Fellini or Pier Paolo Pasolini. Death plays a main role in both literature and film.
The stroll takes us over the wide area of "Campo Verano", the German cemetery "Campo Santo Teutonico" in the middle of the Vatican, the particular charnel-house "L'antico Cimitero dei Frati Francescani Cappucini" and ends on the Protestant cemetery famous for its poets, artists and intellectuals.
We will meet countless celebreties. The English romantics Keats and Shelley, Goethe's son Julius August, Garibaldi and Rossini or the co-founder of the communist party of Italy, Antonio Gramsci, who all found their place of rest here. At the same time, it shows the complete art of ceremonial silence and the beauty of the tombstones, kitsch and pathos, all together conveying the richness of these enchanted places.
